Area Economy in 2008: Recession or Resilience?
At least one prominent local economist feels that the Washington area economy is likely to
avoid slipping into a recession this year; however, one suburban Maryland banker thinks the recession is already here.
The recent bankruptcy filing by the parent company of Ensemble Chimes Global, the nation's largest provider of management services for contract labor, has left thousands of contract workers without jobs and brought on a financial crisis for many staffing firms.
One senior writer at Information Week says that "The IT skills famine plaguing the United States is only going to get worse", but another senior writer at the same magazine says "No, the tech skills shortage doesn't exist." Finally, many job applicants are under the impression that employers no longer ask for references or that they never actually call them. Not so, says one executive coach: "Reference checking is a critical factor in hiring."
